Our paper

We source the best papers in the world — luxuriously smooth pages, suitable for fountain pen; covers that showcase special paper-making techniques. We rigorously research where and how a paper is made, and will only use papers that are made responsibly and sustainably.

Mark+Fold diary, layflat, Mark+Fold notebooks

The best notebook paper

We use a beautifully heavyweight 120gsm paper for our notebook and diary pages (many notebooks use 80-100gsm). This FSC-certified paper is luxuriously smooth, and perfect for use with fountain pen thanks to its opacity. It was chosen as part of our 100 White Papers project, where we gathered as many papers as we could lay our hands on, in order to find just the right one.

Notebook Mark One, Mark+Fold notebooks, Wild black 30% cotton

30% Cotton

This is one of our favourite cover materials, which we have been using since Our First Notebook in 2015. Its beautifully tactile surface is thanks to a more gentle rolling process in production, so some of the texture of the wet pulp remains in the finished sheet. This FSC-certified card has a 30% cotton content, which helps it take on a beautiful patina with use. Its pillowy thickness means it takes blind debossing extremely well in the detail of our thumbcut motif.

Cupcycling, Extract paper, made in Cumbria, James Cropper Mill

Extract, made from recycled coffee cups

Extract papers are made at the James Cropper Mill in Cumbria, using a mixture of FSC-certified pulp from sustainably-managed forests and coffee cups collected at high street outlets in the UK. For many years the challenge was in removing the waterproof coating on the inside of the cups, but the mill we work with has developed a technique for removing the waste plastic, which is then used to make components for the aeronautical industry.
