What paper do you use?
We use 120gsm smooth cream paper for our notebooks and diaries. For our Desktop Pads, we use 100gsm paper which is a 'regular' texture (slightly less smooth than the notebook paper). Both perform very well with fountain pen and other specialist writing tools.
We use different papers for each batch of notebooks or diaries. These tend to be 300-380gsm premium card, made in the UK and Europe. For details of a specific paper, check the product page.
All our papers are FSC-certified sustainably-sourced papers, chosen for their performance in our tests. We select based on the paper's overall look and feel, opacity, smoothness, resistance to feathering and bleed through.
Where are your products made?
We work with expert printers and book-binders in the UK and Belgium. Our Desktop Pads are printed and bound in Aberdeen at a small, family-run specialist printer. This is also where we print our greetings cards and Christmas Cards.
Our specialist layflat binding with cold glue is available at just a handful of expert book-binderies in Europe. We work with the same team of Dutch book-binders that made our first batch of notebooks for us in 2015. We know and trust them, and the quality is always impeccable.
We continue to build relationships with new suppliers, whilst remaining loyal to those who have helped create and maintain Mark+Fold's reputation for excellent quality.
Is the paper sustainably-made?
We only ever consider papers that are certified FSC, which means (i) 3 trees are planted for every one felled, (ii) there is a continuous chain of custody from the source to our bindery.
We are constantly adding to our library of paper swatches from the world's leading sustainably paper mills. We will always consider UK-made papers first, except when something remarkable is exclusive to another mill — for example our neon covers are made at the Gmund mill in Germany, and some of our special editions use papers made by Takeo in Japan.
Are your diaries suitable for fountain pen?
Yes, we use some of the best quality papers in the world. Chosen for their opacity, smoothness and resistance to feathering and bleed through. Our notebooks and diaries use a smooth 120gsm paper with excellent opacity. Our desktop planner pads are generally used for single-sided writing, so these are 100gsm and a slightly rougher texture with a little more bite.
