The story behind our Leather Notebook Covers
For eight years now, Mark+Fold has worked with Doe Leather to create our Leather Notebook Covers. Made from exceptionally high quality, veg-tanned bridle hide, they are hand-finished in Walsall, each cover is designed to last a lifetime and soften beautifully with use.
Every piece is finished with a colour loop from the Doe family archive, with the much-loved Avocado Green making its return this year.
Amy says: “I was immediately drawn to the lustrous quality of Doe’s leathers and the family heritage behind them. The details are so beautifully resolved that I could see Deborah shares our philosophy of keeping things simple but getting every detail just right. As someone who also comes from a family of makers, I know how deeply formative that is. For both of us, it has shaped our lives and our work, making beautiful, functional pieces for people to use every day.”
We spoke to Doe Leather founder Deborah Thomas about the family history behind the brand, the distinctive quality of bridle hide, and the philosophy that guides their work.
How did Doe Leather begin?
"I founded Doe in 2013 to create bags and accessories using the best materials and the most skilled craftspeople. Our story goes back further to my great-great-grandfather, William Pearce, who founded a tannery in Northampton in 1908. For almost a century, the business was known worldwide for its special finishes and embossing, before closing in the early 2000s.
When it closed, my father and I saved the archive swatch books, patterns dating back to the 1920s. These original colours and textures are now used to add the tannery’s history to every Doe piece, which makes each one a truly limited edition."
Why bridle hide?
"Bridle hide is the strongest and most durable leather, cut from the thickest part of the cow hide - the butt. Vegetable-tanned and finished with natural waxes and oils, it develops character with use and will last for decades."
What is your philosophy?
"In a world of fast fashion and flash logos, true luxury comes from taking the time to do things slowly. We believe in thoughtful purchasing and lasting quality, where provenance is part of the story."
Can you tell us about the collaboration and working with us?
