Our collaboration with Marmor Paperie is an ode to the mesmerising craft of paper marbling, combined with the popular Mark+Fold Exercise Book format (48 pages of 120gsm fountain-pen-friendly paper, hand-sewn in Suffolk into a slimline notebook).
Paper-marbling by Marmor Paperie
Every single copy is uniquely hand-printed with a design created by Lucy adding droplets of paint to the water’s surface before laying paper down onto it to transfer this impression onto the paper. The entire process starts again from scratch for every single copy, so no two are the same and Lucy’s artistry is embedded in every single one.
Mark+Fold Exercise Books
As with all Mark+Fold notebooks and diaries, these lay perfectly flat thanks to thread-sewn binding. This is done by master bookbinder Vicki in Suffolk, on a Singer sewing machine built specially for book-binding.
The inside pages are our favourite super-smooth 120gsm cream paper, suitable for fountain pen thanks to its excellent opacity, smoothness and resistance to feathering. Made sustainably in Munkedal, Sweden.
The Marmor for Mark+Fold collaboration
Lucy and Amy both started their businesses in London in 2015. As friends with a mutual respect for one another’s creative work, they had been talking about collaborating for some time and in early 2025 decided to get together and create a range of notebooks together.
The colour theme is inspired by Lucy’s explanation that ‘paper marbling is like a collaboration with the water.’ The swirling blues are like an illustration of the process itself, as well as a nod to summer travels and playing in water, with the neon orange flashes reminding us of orange armbands and fluorescent bikinis!
The three designs were developed by Lucy and Amy working in close collaboration, with the ambition to showcase a spectrum of skills in Lucy’s repertoire and tell some of the story of the Turkish marbling tradition (also known as Ebru), which is on the List of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Three water-themed designs
Wave is the most traditional and intricate of the three designs, using complex comb work to create a pattern called ‘French Curl’ which reminded us of a wave.
Tide is created by drawing lines through the paint to create a vertical pattern like ripples in water.
Rockpool is the most organic of the three designs, with almost accidental looking placement of the droplets, and a bright neon orange veining underneath. This was the first design we created and it immediately reminded us of a Rockpool on a sunny day, clear water you could dip your toes into with the sun twinkling on the surface. The ripple (which creates a 3D illusion effect) is created using a technique called ‘Spanish Wave;’ where Lucy rocks the paper side-to-side as she places it down on the surface.
