FEATURE | LICHEN

Ever since we introduced ‘Lichen’ as a Mark+Fold cover colour in 2020, it’s been one of our most popular shades. As a colour, it’s as complex as the lifeform itself – which is the result of a symbiotic relationship between fungus and algae. These fascinating organisms work in harmony to help one another thrive in environments that, if working alone, they wouldn’t survive. It’s something so familiar to many of us; their eye-catching forms sprawling around the shady sides of trees or brick walls.

Their colours are (in our opinion anyway) surprisingly beautiful. Acid yellows, mellow greens, muted oranges and browns. In the UK there’s one particular hue of lichen that seems to be associated with our climate, which is a calming grey-green. There’s lichen like this in abundance in and around the Scottish landscape where the paper mills we work with are based. Seeing as the nearby rivers that, quite literally, feed into the paper-making process are the same ones that ‘feed’ the lichen, we felt it was fitting to pay homage to the friendly nature of these (often overlooked) organisms in the Mark+Fold range.

It's clearly a colouration that speaks to Mark+Folders. Ethereal, ever-changing and subtle, its timeless quality works brilliantly on the 2022 Monthly Planner and Exercise Books. And with spring in the air, we’re pleased to launch our new Limited Edition Lined Notebook in Lichen. There are only 100 available and are available to order now. We think it’s the perfect way to bring the great outdoors onto your desk. We hope you do too!
