DETAILS | COLD GLUE OTA BINDING

Mark+Fold layflat binding

Our notebooks are made in thread-sewn sections, bound using a very thin layer of glue to attach the gauze, as in traditional bookbinding. The cover is then attached via two elegant hinges either side of the spine, using a very strong glue. The result is as robust as it is elegant, combining strength with the flexibility for the book to flop open effortlessly flat to 180 degrees.

Unlike cheaper magazine-style bindings, we never use stiff 'hotmelt' glues along the spine, which make the book very stiff to open. Instead our glue is applied cold and allowed to air dry, so it retains flexibility.

Our bindery in Belgium is at the heart of a region with a long history of printing and book-binding. Students there can specialise in printing from the age of twelve, and almost everyone you meet had family working in the industry. The quality of craftsmanship, passed through the generations, results in a quality of finish that we have not seen elsewhere. Our partnership began with the first batch of our Our First Notebook in November 2015, and we have worked together on all Mark+Fold notebooks and diaries since then.
