2024 Team Picks

We invited members of the Mark+Fold team to share their back to school memories, how they feel about the new term feeling now and which of the Mark + Fold products they love at this time of year.

Back to school as a child:

I loved the preparation and feeling of being organised at the beginning of term. Shopping for a new pencil case and stationery with my Mum. September has always felt more of a 'New Year' to me than January. My friends and I all had the same Groovy Chick pencil case in Year 9 (even though we hadn't discussed it).

Loved: I loved learning! I was quite shy but had a good group of friends. My favourite subject was geography.
Favourite teacher: Miss Rozier, she was my tutor in year 7 through to year 11. She was a new teacher, and it felt as if we all learned and grew together over the 5 years.

Back to school as an adult:

I felt really positive this year - the last quarter is always busy but exciting, so it’s going to be fun seeing everything coming together.

Ritual: Keep the first few days as low key as possible, limit meetings and allow myself time to find the flow.

Must have: A cup of coffee and a Week Planner. I like to take a few moments each morning to plan my schedule.

Would like: A new candle for my desk, it gives a lovely cosy autumn vibe to my office.

Back to school, back then:

Going back in September always felt exciting – new uniform, new shoes, new pencil case and best of all seeing all my friends again.

I remember having a set of coloured gel pens that were basically treasured possessions at the time.

Favourite teacher was Mrs Fox my textiles teacher, she was just super cool and really encouraging! I still keep in touch with her now.
About going ‘back to school’ September 2025

Back to school, now

The first day back after the holidays this year felt like a fresh reset – I like the structure September brings. I always make sure I have a new notebook and a good pen on hand to feel ready for the weeks ahead.

Must-have: a strong coffee on my desk before I do anything else!

Would like: I treated myself to a new desk plant, makes the workspace instantly feel brighter.

Back to school, back then:

"I was always excited, I was a lover of school. As well as the new shoes, a new pencil case and stationery was very exciting. I remember a flexible ruler which was fun, but also the more technical items like a drawing compass and protractor. I do always remember the ritual of "backing" my books. Wrapping in wrapping paper or sticky back plastic, before I knew how unsustainable it is! At junior school, the head teacher Mr Crosley was a favourite. He used to say "you don't come to school to work, you come to school to play!" He made learning and school fun. Another favourite, Mr Sexton, my art teacher. Always took us to great exhibitions, and so much fun! Think there is a theme there - fun!"

Back to school now:

Ritual: A new notebook always feels like a fresh start! For me the dot paper!
Must have: A notebook and calculator! I'm old school, prefer a calculator rather than the one on my phone.

Sequoia Exercise book with the washi tape to add some fun! Still super stylish!
Lamy Ballpoint pen.
Flouro Graphite pencil - I will use to highlight any key points in my notebook.

Back to school, back then:

“ I have clearer memories of secondary school and really clearly remember walking up to the gates on Sandall Road and being very conscious of my ‘first day back’ outfit, which would have had a lot of thought. And the week before I would have spent a lot of time shopping for stationery, organising it all into my pencil case, getting ready. On the first day we got a planner to fill in, and I loved that as you can imagine! In year 7 I had a Harley Davidson pencil case! I lived near Camden Market so there was a lot of that kind of stuff around and I liked it. I have a collection of pencil cases still, because I bought a new one each September, along with a new notebook and pens of course. I was really into having a black pen and then some bright coloured ones, so I could organise my notes as I was writing things down. I was very into colour-coding.

I was lucky to have a lot of inspiring teachers over the years. Miss Jenn was my year 2 teacher and she was really inspiring, as was Ms Bush in year 6 who had had a career in advertising and then become a teacher so she had a very worldly way about her. At secondary school Ms Pringle was a brilliant DT teacher and Ms Levitt got us all through the emotional tribulations of being 16 year olds — she was a legend.”

Loved: “ I liked to walk into a room, open to absorbing new things. And at secondary school I enjoyed all the organisation — there was a lot of revision schedules, writing down where I needed to be and when. I loved all that.

Loathed: I went to a girls school and it could be really bitchy, groups of girls would gang up on people and be really mean to them.

This year we went away for longer than usual, and I’ve had a bit of mental jetlag as my brain is slowly readjusting to work again. But now my kids are back at school, I am really looking forward to resuming my routines.

I am very lucky to live near the woods, so I like to go for a nice long walk a few times a week. I find that however I am feeling beforehand, this always makes me feel calmer, happier — and my most creative ideas pop into my head while I am out walking, always. Once I’m at my desk, coffee and a tidy clear surface are essential. And then it’s time for lists, as well as some reflective notes — What are my big objectives or dreams for the next few months? What are the top priorities? I find this helpful before I get too bogged down in ‘what needs to get done today.'

A new notebook is an absolute must in September, I need a fresh blank page to start back with. A new pen is also something I usually treat myself to at this time of year, a good reliable black pen that feels good to write with. And some kind of novelty too, like a neon highlighter pencil, so I can write a list and then highlight the top most important things.

It’s my birthday next week so I am hoping to get some nice new black leather shoes for autumn (after a few months of sandals I am really ready for some nice new socks and smart shoes for work days).

"It's all about simplicity for me. And I love a good notebook — I will always have one on the go for work, and one by my bed for downloading before I go to sleep. I think to brighten those grey January days I would like to kick off 2025 with a Notebook Edition in Neon. And I'll need to have the 2025 Postcard Calendar, which I have been imagining for several years and now we have finally produced it for 2025! Lastly (and perhaps this is cheating) I'm going to have the Ultimate Gift Box, because this has all of the best Mark+Fold things all in one box. And I know Jen will wrap it so beautifully, I will have so much fun unwrapping it all!"
